You may have shared personal details — names, locations, account information, even screenshots — during a conversation with an AI chatbot. The good news is that most major AI platforms let you delete your chat history and limit how your data is used. This guide walks you through the steps for each one.

🔔 Important: Deleting your chat history and opting out of training are two separate actions. Turning off training does not automatically delete past conversations, and deleting chats does not stop future ones from being used. For full control, do both.

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

Delete your conversations:

  1. Go to chatgpt.com and sign in.
  2. Click your profile icon in the top-right corner.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Go to Data Controls.
  5. Click Delete All Chats to remove your entire history — or delete individual chats from the sidebar.

Stop your data from being used for training:

  1. In the same Data Controls section, find Improve the Model for Everyone.
  2. Turn off the toggle.

Turn off Memory:

  1. Go to Settings > Personalization.
  2. Turn off Memory to stop ChatGPT from saving personal details across sessions.
  3. Click Manage Memory > Clear ChatGPT's Memory to erase what it has already stored.

Use Temporary Chat for sensitive topics:

When you need to ask something you don't want saved, use the Temporary Chat feature. These chats are not stored in your history and are not used for model training.

🔔 Important: Even after opting out, OpenAI may still review conversations for safety monitoring. To fully remove your personal data from their systems, submit a request through OpenAI's Privacy Portal.

Google Gemini

Delete your conversations:

  1. Go to gemini.google.com and sign in.
  2. Click the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner.
  3. Select Activity.
  4. Next to Gemini Apps Activity, click Delete and choose your preferred timeframe — or select Delete All Time to clear everything.

Stop your data from being used for training:

  1. On the same Activity page, click Turn Off next to Gemini Apps Activity.
  2. Choose Turn Off and Delete Activity, then click Next > Delete.
🔔 Important: Even with activity turned off, Google may still retain your data for up to 72 hours. Turning off activity prevents long-term storage and training use.

Microsoft Copilot

Delete your conversations:

  1. Go to copilot.microsoft.com and sign in.
  2. Click the three dots (⋯) in the upper-right corner.
  3. Select Settings > Personalization.
  4. Turn off Saved memories and Chat history to stop Copilot from retaining your conversations going forward.

Delete past activity:

  1. Go to the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard.
  2. Under Copilot Activity (or Search History), select and delete your past interactions.

Stop your data from being used for training:

  1. In Copilot's Settings, look for Model Training on Text and Model Training on Voice.
  2. Turn off both toggles.
🔔 Important: If you use Copilot through a workplace Microsoft 365 account, your organization's IT administrator may control some of these settings. Check with your admin if options are unavailable.

Meta AI

Manage your data:

  1. Open Meta AI through Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, or WhatsApp.
  2. Go to your Meta Account Settings.
  3. Navigate to the Privacy or AI Interactions section.
  4. Look for options to view and delete your AI conversation data.
🔔 Important: Meta has stated it may use your AI conversations to personalize ads across Facebook and Instagram. Review your ad preferences and data settings regularly.

General Tips for All Platforms

  1. Review your settings regularly. AI platforms update their privacy controls frequently — what you set up today may change with the next update.
  2. Don't rely on deletion alone. Once data has been used to train a model, removing your conversation does not "untrain" it. Opt out of training as your first priority.
  3. Use Trend Micro ScamCheck to stay protected from scam links and deepfake content that might appear in or around AI tools.
  4. Avoid sharing sensitive details with any AI tool. If you wouldn't post it in a public forum, don't type it into a chatbot.
