If you see this message while turning on Trend Micro VPN on your Mac:

Don’t worry — this is usually caused by a connection issue and can be fixed with a few simple steps.
Why does this happen?
Error #40309 is usually related to:
- A temporary internet connection problem.
- A network restriction.
- An issue with your VPN subscription or available devices.
How to fix it
- ✅ Check your subscription
Make sure your Trend Micro subscription is active and that you still have space to add the VPN to your device.
Here’s how:- Sign in to your Trend Micro account.
- Click Manage Devices under Trend Micro VPN.
- Check if you have an available slot (or “seat”) for another device.
If there are no available slots, you may need to remove an old device or upgrade your plan.
- 🌐 Check your internet connection
A slow or restricted internet connection can prevent the VPN from activating.
Try these quick fixes:- Switch to a different Wi-Fi network.
- Use mobile hotspot temporarily to test.
- Wait a few minutes and try again (it could be temporary).
- Restart your modem/router.
If the issue continues, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to make sure there are no network restrictions.
- 🔄 Reinstall Trend Micro VPN
If the steps above don’t work, reinstalling the app may help.
- Uninstall Trend Micro VPN
- Make sure Trend Micro VPN is closed.
- Open Finder.
- Click Applications.
- Drag Trend Micro VPN to the Trash.
- Enter your Mac administrator password if asked.
- Click Finder > Empty Trash to fully remove it.
- Reinstall the app
- Open the App Store on your Mac.
- Search for Trend Micro VPN – Safe VPN Proxy App.
- Click Get, then Install.
- Open the app and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Uninstall Trend Micro VPN
