Error #40309 is usually related to:

How to fix it

  1. ✅ Check your subscription

    Make sure your Trend Micro subscription is active and that you still have space to add the VPN to your device.
    Here’s how:

    1. Sign in to your Trend Micro account.
    2. Click Manage Devices under Trend Micro VPN.
    3. Check if you have an available slot (or “seat”) for another device.

    If there are no available slots, you may need to remove an old device or upgrade your plan.

  2. 🌐 Check your internet connection

    A slow or restricted internet connection can prevent the VPN from activating.
    Try these quick fixes:

    • Switch to a different Wi-Fi network.
    • Use mobile hotspot temporarily to test.
    • Wait a few minutes and try again (it could be temporary).
    • Restart your modem/router.

    If the issue continues, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to make sure there are no network restrictions.

  3. 🔄 Reinstall Trend Micro VPN

    If the steps above don’t work, reinstalling the app may help.

    1. Uninstall Trend Micro VPN
      1. Make sure Trend Micro VPN is closed.
      2. Open Finder.
      3. Click Applications.
      4. Drag Trend Micro VPN to the Trash.
      5. Enter your Mac administrator password if asked.
      6. Click Finder > Empty Trash to fully remove it.
    2. Reinstall the app
      1. Open the App Store on your Mac.
      2. Search for Trend Micro VPN – Safe VPN Proxy App.
      3. Click Get, then Install.
      4. Open the app and follow the on-screen instructions.
