What Is a Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) Attack?
A Man-in-the-Middle (MiTM) attack, happens when a hacker secretly places themselves between you and the person, website, or app you’re trying to talk to online.
It’s like writing a letter to a friend — but before it reaches them, a stranger opens it, reads it, maybe changes it to a few words, and then sends it on without you knowing. With this trick, hackers can:
- See what you’re doing online
- Steal passwords, credit card numbers, or personal details
- Change the information you send or receive
- Install malware (harmful software) on your device

Where MitM Attacks Can Happen
MitM attacks can happen anywhere data travels online, not just on public Wi-Fi. Here are common ways hackers do it:
- On Public or Unsecured Wi-Fi
Hackers often create fake Wi-Fi networks or join open ones to spy on users. When you connect, they can see your online activity and steal your data. - Through Fake or Phishing Websites
Some hackers build look-alike websites (like fake banking or shopping sites). When you log in, they capture your information and sometimes forward it to the real site — so you won’t even notice. - With Compromised Routers or Networks
If your home internet router or office network is outdated or infected, hackers can intercept your internet traffic and collect data from connected devices. - In Emails or Messages
Cybercriminals may intercept or alter emails, changing details like payment accounts or links. This is common in phishing or business email scams. - Through Infected Devices
If your phone or computer already has malware, it can act as a “middleman” — letting hackers spy on everything you send and receive.
Signs of a Possible MitM Attack
Be alert if you notice:
- Frequent Wi-Fi disconnections or reconnections
- Security warnings like “This site is not secure”
- Websites that look different or load strangely
- Emails or messages with changed account numbers or suspicious links
- Unfamiliar logins or activities in your online accounts
How to Protect Yourself
- Use a VPN
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) encrypts your internet traffic, keeping it private and safe from anyone trying to spy on it.
If you use Trend Micro VPN, keep it turned on when connecting to the internet.
