If you see either of these error messages while downloading or installing Trend Micro, this article will help:

  • "We detected you're using a 32-bit system" (shown by the Trend Micro Downloader)

  • "This installer requires 64-bit Windows, but your computer uses 32-bit Windows" (shown by the Trend Micro Installer)

Both mean the same thing: Trend Micro Maximum Security runs only on 64-bit versions of Windows, and your computer is currently running 32-bit Windows. Don't worry — let's check your system and sort out your options.

Why Did This Happen?

Trend Micro Maximum Security is built for 64-bit Windows only. When your PC is running a 32-bit version of Windows, the installer stops and shows one of the errors above so it doesn't install a version that won't run.

Whether you can fix this depends on your hardware, not just your current Windows version — so the first step is to check what your PC supports.

How to Fix This Error

Follow these three steps in order to resolve the error and get Trend Micro installed:

  1. Check what your PC supports.

    1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.

    2. Type msinfo32 and press Enter.

    3. In the System Information window, find the System Type entry:

      • If it says x64-based PC, your hardware supports 64-bit Windows. ✅ You can upgrade — continue to step 2.

      • If it says x86-based PC, your hardware supports 32-bit only. ❌ It cannot run 64-bit Windows, so it can't run this version of Trend Micro. See "If Your PC Can't Run 64-bit Windows" below.

  2. Upgrade to 64-bit Windows (only if your PC shows x64-based PC).

🔔 Important: Moving from 32-bit to 64-bit Windows is not a simple update. Windows cannot switch a 32-bit installation to 64-bit in place — it requires a clean installation, which erases everything on your PC (files, apps, and settings). Please read this step fully before you begin, and back up first.
    1. Back up your data — this is essential. Because the upgrade wipes your PC, save all important files to an external drive or cloud storage first. Anything not backed up will be lost.

    2. Upgrade Windows through Microsoft. Switching to 64-bit Windows is a Microsoft Windows task, not a Trend Micro one. For the official steps and eligibility details:

      • Visit the Microsoft Support website for guidance on installing 64-bit Windows.

      • You can also contact Microsoft Support by phone or online for personalized help.

  3. Reinstall Trend Micro Maximum Security. Once you're running 64-bit Windows:

    1. Download the Trend Micro Maximum Security installer again from the official website.

    2. Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.

    3. When it finishes and shows you're Protected, you're all set! ✅

If Your PC Can't Run 64-bit Windows

If step 1 showed x86-based PC, your hardware can only run 32-bit Windows, so it isn't compatible with this version of Trend Micro Maximum Security — there's no software fix that changes that.

Here's what you can do:

  • Contact Trend Micro Support so we can confirm your options and check whether a compatible Trend Micro product is available for your setup.

  • If you're planning a new device, look for one listed as 64-bit (most computers made in the last several years are).
