If you see the message below while installing Trend Micro Security on your Windows PC, this guide will walk you through the steps to resolve it.

"Installation Incomplete. Error code #1603, 3002, 0xe0220012"

Why Does This Happen?

This error is usually caused by leftover files from a previous Trend Micro installation combined with pending Windows Updates. Clearing out those old files and making sure Windows is up to date almost always resolves it.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Log in as an administrator. Make sure the Windows account you're using has administrator privileges. If you're not sure, go to Settings > Accounts > Your Info and check if it says "Administrator" under your name.
  2. Install the latest Windows Updates.
    • Click the Start menu and open Settings.
    • Go to Windows Update and click Check for updates.
    • Install any available updates, then restart your PC when prompted.
🔔 Important Note: Do not skip this step. Missing Windows Updates are one of the most common causes of this error.
  3. Remove leftover Trend Micro files using the Remnant File Remover Tool.
    • Download the Trend Micro Remnant File Remover Tool.
    • Double-click the downloaded file to run it.
    • If prompted by User Account Control, click Yes to allow it to run.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to remove all leftover Trend Micro files.
    • Restart your PC once the tool finishes.
  4. Reinstall Trend Micro Security. After restarting, run the Trend Micro installer again. Visit trendmicro.com/install to download a fresh copy if needed. If the installation completes and your main console shows Protected, you're all set! ✅
