You may have shared personal details — names, locations, account information, even screenshots — during a conversation with an AI chatbot. The good news is that most major AI platforms let you delete your chat history and limit how your data is used. This guide walks you through the steps for each one.
ChatGPT (OpenAI)
Delete your conversations:
- Go to chatgpt.com and sign in.
- Click your profile icon in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Go to Data Controls.
- Click Delete All Chats to remove your entire history — or delete individual chats from the sidebar.
Stop your data from being used for training:
- In the same Data Controls section, find Improve the Model for Everyone.
- Turn off the toggle.
Turn off Memory:
- Go to Settings > Personalization.
- Turn off Memory to stop ChatGPT from saving personal details across sessions.
- Click Manage Memory > Clear ChatGPT's Memory to erase what it has already stored.
Use Temporary Chat for sensitive topics:
When you need to ask something you don't want saved, use the Temporary Chat feature. These chats are not stored in your history and are not used for model training.
Google Gemini
Delete your conversations:
- Go to gemini.google.com and sign in.
- Click the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner.
- Select Activity.
- Next to Gemini Apps Activity, click Delete and choose your preferred timeframe — or select Delete All Time to clear everything.
Stop your data from being used for training:
- On the same Activity page, click Turn Off next to Gemini Apps Activity.
- Choose Turn Off and Delete Activity, then click Next > Delete.
Microsoft Copilot
Delete your conversations:
- Go to copilot.microsoft.com and sign in.
- Click the three dots (⋯) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings > Personalization.
- Turn off Saved memories and Chat history to stop Copilot from retaining your conversations going forward.
Delete past activity:
- Go to the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard.
- Under Copilot Activity (or Search History), select and delete your past interactions.
Stop your data from being used for training:
- In Copilot's Settings, look for Model Training on Text and Model Training on Voice.
- Turn off both toggles.
Meta AI
Delete your conversations in Messenger/Instagram/Facebook:
- Open the chat where you used Meta AI.
- Find the conversation thread with Meta AI.
- Press and hold (mobile) or click the 3 dots (⋯) on the chat.
- Tap Delete or Delete chat.
- Confirm.
- This removes the conversation from your account.
General Tips for All Platforms
- Review your settings regularly. AI platforms update their privacy controls frequently — what you set up today may change with the next update.
- Don't rely on deletion alone. Once data has been used to train a model, removing your conversation does not "untrain" it. Opt out of training as your first priority.
- Use Trend Micro ScamCheck to stay protected from scam links and deepfake content that might appear in or around AI tools.
- Avoid sharing sensitive details with any AI tool. If you wouldn't post it in a public forum, don't type it into a chatbot.
