When opening Trend Micro VPN, Windows may ask you to choose a certificate every time. You might also see two or more certificate options, even though you already installed one.

Why is this happening?

  • Your computer has extra, old, or invalid certificates saved in your personal certificate store.
  • These unnecessary certificates confuse Windows, causing the “choose a certificate” message to appear repeatedly.
  • This is a known Windows issue and can happen with other apps—not just Trend Micro.

How do I fix this?

STEP 1: Open the Certificate Manager:

  1. Press Windows key + R on your keyboard.
  2. Type certmgr.msc in the box, then press Enter.
  3. Go to Personal Certificates.
  4. In the window that opens, select PersonalCertificates on the left side.

STEP 2: Delete extra certificates:

  1. Look at all the certificates listed in the middle.
  2. Right-click each one, and choose Delete.
  3. These are unnecessary certificates that cause the pop-up.

STEP 3: Try opening Trend Micro VPN again:

  1. Open the Trend Micro VPN app.
  2. The choose a certificate pop-up message should no longer appear.

NOTE: If the issue continues, restart your computer and check again.
