Your Mac suddenly overheats after upgrading to macOS Monterey.
Why did this happen?
Your system might have performance issues because some apps are still being optimized for the new macOS.
What should I do next?
- Check if your Mac is compatible with macOS Monterey:
Listed below are devices that can run the new operating system:
- MacBook, early 2016 and later
- MacBook Air, early 2015 and later
- MacBook Pro, early 2015 and later
- Mac Pro, late 2013 and later
- Mac Mini, late 2014 and later
- iMac, late 2015 and later
- iMac Pro, 2017 and later
- End unnecessary apps and background tasks:
Use Activity Monitor to see which apps are using up Mac resources:
- Go to Applications > Utilities.
- Double-click Activity Monitor.
- Under the CPU tab, sort the list by %CPU to see which apps uses the most resources.
- Select the app you want to end, then click the button at the top.
- Reset System Management Controller:
Resetting the System Management Controller or SMC fixes hardware and performance issues. Doing this will not remove any data you saved on your Mac.
- Test your Mac with Apple Diagnostics:
- Go to Apple menu > Shut down.
- Prepare your Mac. Disconnect all external devices except for your keyboard, mouse, display, Ethernet connection (if applicable), and connection to AC power.
- Check if your Mac is an using Apple silicon or Intel processor:
- Go to Apple menu > About this Mac.
- Under the Mac details, Intel processors will show an item that is labeled Processor, while Apple silicon will show an item labeled Chip.
- Open Apple Diagnostics:
- If you have an Apple Silicon Mac:
- Turn ON your Mac and continue to press and hold the Power button until you see the Startup Options window that includes a icon labelled Options.
- Press the COMMAND ⌘ + D keys at the same time.
- If you have an Intel processor Mac:
- Turn ON your Mac and immediately press the D keys on your keyboard as it turns ON.
- Release the D key when you see a progress bar, or if you are asked to choose a language.
- If you have an Apple Silicon Mac:
- Wait as the test completes. The results will include reference codes about the completed diagnostics.
See the full list and its corresponding solutions here: Apple Diagnostics reference codes.
- Keep your apps up-to-date:
Developers update their applications regularly. Most updates include performance improvements and bug fixes:
- Launch the App Store.
- Go to Preferences and enable Automatic Updates. This will update your apps automatically.
To update apps downloaded outside the App Store, you need to launch each one and check for updates from the Application menu.
